Comparing Trex, Wood, & Fiberon: 6 Considerations

The Battle of the Boards: Trex vs Fiberon

When you’re looking for a strong, durable decking material to replace your old deck or thinking of building a new one from scratch, you have some choices to make. Composite decking offers many more benefits over traditional wood materials. Let’s look at two of the biggest names in composite decking materials, Trex and Fiberon. Before you pick the first composite decking boards you see, there are a few things to review.

1. Environmental impact.

One of the greenest solutions on the market, composite decking is made up of recycled plastics and wood. Up to 95% of all boards and railings are recycled materials including both Fiberon and Trex. Fiberon has become an industry leader, housing their own recycling plant for source material and responsible for over 1 million pounds of plastic recycling each year. Since 1997, Fiberon has been manufacturing and selling high-quality composite, PVC decking and railing products for outdoor living.

2. Long-life.

Unlike wood planks, composite boards are resistant to fading, staining and have a longer life expectancy of at least 25 years. Fiberon boards are slightly more durable, offer better scratch resistance and can potentially last longer than Trex. Fiberon introduced the industry’s first 25-year stain and fade warranty on its single colour Goodlife line and 30 years on its multi chromatic Goodlife and all the way up to lifetime on its PVC Decking. Trex offers a blanket 25-year warranty coverage.

3. Low maintenance.

One of the biggest advantages of composite decking is that it is easily cleaned with a sweep and a quick spray from a garden hose, there is no mold or mildew and resistant to insects. .

4. Trex & Fiberon have better overall value

Composites brands like Trex or Fiberon may have a higher initial cost than some wood options, but with lower cleaning and maintenance costs and a longer life span, the overall costs of your deck are significantly lower. You can see with our deck packages here

5. Options available.

When it comes to board selection and type, Fiberon offers more options. There are 4 different composite series as well as PVC with 29 colors to choose from and the important thing to note is the quality level. Trex on the other hand, offers three series and 20 colours. With Fiberon there is no quality difference across lines. It is consistent, this is great news for the consumer as cost differences between lines are largely pattern and colour driven.

This is not the case for Trex

there are significant quality differences across all Trex lines.

6. Warranties.

Both brands offer labour warranties when installed by certified professionals. Fiberon offers 5 years labour costs protection if you install their product with a Fiberon Pro. Trex also offers labour warranty, but it is based on the experience of the installer and there are three ranges of certification.

What We Trust

There’s one thing we know for certain: Fiberon is hands down a superior product that will stand the test of time and has the benefit of saving you money. That is why we recommend Fiberon to all our customers.
